William
F. Ludwig, Senior, born 1879 in Germany, emigrated to the United
States with his family at the age of eight. As a percussionist,
Ludwig began in the manufacturing field by inventing drum pedals
in the early 1900s, the first being for a timpani. As Ludwig
got more and more into the manufacturing end of the percussion
industry, his talents and ambition brought him to owning his
own company.
The famous
Speed King pedal was created in 1937, and Ludwig moved forward
from there, getting into many aspects of Percussion instruments.
Although the Ludwig company was aggressive in its promotion and
marketing, the biggest break for the company came when Ringo
Starr appeared on the famous Ed Sullivan broadcast playing a
set of Ludwig Drums. The Ludwig company has never looked back
since.

and innovative reputation continues to make Ludwig Drums
